New for 2021: Rampart Epic Mixed Terrain Ride
For the first official ride of the Triple Crown season, we are going to head into the hills for a twist on the old Anti-Epic course, the Rampart Epic. As the name implies, rather than staying out east where the scenery is at times, um, less than spectacular, we will climb into the foothills amidst the rocks and trees of Mt. Herman and Rampart Range Road for a ride that is both more beautiful and more challenging. Unlike our gravel grinder, this is more of a mixed terrain ride, encompassing about 30 miles of pavement, a two-mile B road, a bit of single track, a section of the Santa Fe trail, and the rest gravel roads of varying degrees of quality. There is a ten mile climb but it is not onerous: five miles of 5% grade on average, and then another five of rollers coming out at Rampart Range Road, which runs along the spine of the foothills from Colorado Springs to Castle Rock.
Rather than crushing your soul with endless rollers through washboard and sand, we are hoping you will find this ride lifts your spirits, as you ascend into the foothills of our beautiful mountains and past numerous rock formations, both impressive and impressionistic. The downhill section is technical as well as fun; a gravel rollercoaster that will require your full concentration but reward you with a screaming finish to Perry Park road, the longest paved connector of the day. The last significant landmark on the course will be Castlewood Canyon, which you approach from the south for an out and back spur before the final few miles past the mesas of southern Douglas County, giving way to vistas of Pike's Peak and the final downhill miles into the finish.
