New For 2021: Peak to Peak Double
IMPORTANT: If we have fewer than six registered riders as of Sunday night, this event will go to a brevet (unsupported, free) format with a starting time of 4 a.m. for everyone.
The first of the new paved courses for the 2021 season puts a twist on most of the doubles you see in this country: almost all of the climbing is loaded into the second half of the ride. This presents a unique opportunity as well as a bit of a challenge for riders participating in this ride. If you can stay with the pack, the first half of this course will be a lot easier. This is a great opportunity to band together and share the workload on the faster, flatter first section. But once you turn west and start to climb towards Drake, all bets are off. The key here will be saving enough energy to successfully climb up to the beautiful Peak to Peak Highway, following the undulating course as it meanders along the mountains to the west of the Front Range. With the main climb starting about 80 miles into the ride, most of the climbing you will do is in the short, punchy sections all along the Peak to Peak. Depending on your riding style, this might make the accumulation of over 17,000 feet more managable. You descend into Blackhawk, which has revised their cycling route further and is now more direct, and then finally down Central City Parkway to the I-70 corridor, where you take a familiar route down 40 and back into Golden. Most all of the roads you travel on this ride will be familiar, but you have probably never ridden them in this order - easy stuff first, hard stuff last!
