About this event

The Pennock Penance Double Century is a new mixed-surface event for 2022! This challenging double century explores some of the gravel roads that are close to areas we common ride but usually go unexplored.

Here are the highlights for this great ride:

Distance: 204 miles
Climbing: 16,100 feet
Gravel/Pavement mix: 60/40
Start Time: Wheels turning at 4AM; Early start option 3AM
Time Limit: 19 hours
Start/End Location: Grace Place in Berthoud
Map Link: Ride With GPS Link

Support: This is an unsupported ride except that we will have a water drop in one of the more remote areas of the route. There are also a limited number of stores along the route which are noted on the map.

Course Description: This event features 3 major climbs:

Pennock Pass (elev. 9163 feet), Category 1: This is 4000 feet of uninterrupted climbing from Masonville. It starts on the relatively familiar Stove Prairie Road, but cuts off onto Buckhorn Road partway up for the core of the climb to the summit. It's a twisty and scenic ride on a well-maintained dirt road the entire way.

Deadman Hill (elev. 10,269 feet), Category 1. This 3500 foot climb up from the Poudre Canyon takes us through Red Feather Lakes and then continues off to the west to the summit at just over 10,000 feet. This climb is interrupted by multiple short descents to give your legs a chance to recover!

Sand Creek Road (elev 8992 feet), Category 3. After a jaunt to the Wyoming border, we do this last approximately 1300 foot climb before beginning the long descent back toward town!

Additional Notes:

  1. Some ultra-distance experience is encouraged (but not required) to participate in this event. If you do not have such experience, we do recommend having personal support.
  2. This ride is unsupported except that we will have a water drop spot.
  3. Given the exposure to high altitude, nasty weather can be a major concern with this event. Participants need to be prepared and bring their best winter- and wet-riding gear with them!
  4. Lights and reflective gear are required!
  5. While this ride does have significant miles on pavement, you will want a proper gravel bike/tires for this ride.
